7/2/25 Can you survive underwater? David Blaine TED Talk

The term literacy narrative can be described as a story that reflects the teller's procedure as well as advancements integrating new ideas within literacy. Literacy can be defined as simply reading a book or more complex, interpreting said book. In the David Blaine Ted Talk I believe that he covers a unique form of Literacy narrative. He hone in on the idea of a deep understanding or interpretation of a concept. He states at one point, “I kept pushing to 10 minutes. At 10 minutes you start getting all these really strong tingling sensations in your fingers and toes. And I knew that that was blood shunting, when the blood rushes away from your extremities to provide oxygen to your vital organs. At 11 minutes I started feeling throbbing sensations in my legs, and my lips started to feel really strange.” At this point he expresses how not only did he have a deep understanding for the topic of, holding his breath underwater for an absurd amount of time. But he also expresses what he was feeling in each moment in specific parts of his body. Blaine perfectly articulates himself, so the reader is able to fully grasp this concept that I assume a vast majority of us have not been able to accomplish. With this being said I believe that his Ted Talk is an example of literacy narrative and that's because he has such a deep understanding for not breathing underwater to the point that he is able to cohesively articulate it to his audience. This in turn allows his intense understanding of this to become a part of his vocabulary.

  1. you did a great job defining literary narrative by relating the accounts of the ted talk to the definition. Overall you provided solid quotes, summarized it perfectly, and lastly went in depth with what was going on in it. Fantastic job!!!!-Sean

  2. I really like how we thought the same thing, where in a sense we acknowledged his deeper feelings of self-accomplishment with this challenge. Another thing is the words you used to describe what he used to help the audience know how big of a task it was to him, besides the main thing, which is holding his breath for so long. - Juanita

  4. Great blog, honestly. I really liked you interpretation and how you used the quote you chose to really connect with the audience. The only suggestion I have is to consider starting the paragraph by directly answering the question before diving into your explanation and examples. This helps hook the reader right away and gives them a clear idea of what to expect, making sure they don't get lost in the text. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
