7/16/25 The problem with being human
“and everything that is happening is happening in his movie, so to speak; it is all, somehow both “for” and “about” him.”
This is called main character syndrome. I think we’ve all fallen into this way of thinking at some point or another. I understand how this could be harmful to the existence of other people just based on pure selfishness. I think a good example of this is politics. It's so easy to look at politics from your own point of view and immediately choose a candidate on either side. But I believe in order for our world to truly “work” it is good to see from other’s perspectives before just picking solely based on what best suits your needs. Many don't look at the downsides or if we do we somehow find a way to debunk that those are even downsides. This causes so much strife and it’s so preventable if people would stop being ignorant to others.
“Studying the humanities helps us correct our naturally lazy and approximate habits of projection,”
I never really looked into what humanities are. Like I hear people talking about them but I never truly understood what they do. Based on what I've read and specifically this quote I think it’s truly necessary that everyone takes a humanities course. It allows for people to be wrong in a space where they can be corrected cordially rather than out in the “real world” where others won’t walk them through the issues of not truly seeing others. This also allows them to get a strong foundation on how to simply be good people and listen to others rather than just see the world from their own perspective.
“We study the world in order to understand it more fully and locate ourselves more sanely within it; to make ourselves more powerful, confident and compassionate people.”
Knowledge is power. Gaining others perspectives and feeding off of what they have to offer you not just what you think will put you far ahead those who don’t. I like how he said “Locate ourselves more sanely within it;” This to me just shows that we’re all searching for a sense of belonging. But that in the process of doing that it’s also worth uplifting others because we’re all doing the same thing just in a different format.
